You Matter More

I have this friend. We’ll call her K.

We have been friends since the 6th grade. She was my first and best girlfriend.

I have forgot a lot of years of my life. I was just in survival mode. But when the universe was deciding my fate, she was there. She was there in the hospital. She was there after I had my kids. I was in her wedding.

I remember bits and pieces of meeting her. But she can vividly remember the day we met. To hear her explain it has always been awkward in my head because I don’t remember it the way she does.

But I realized something the other day.

Instead of feeling guilty about not having the memory, I should be proud that for that one day, I changed someone’s life.

For me it was me being a kid and picking her for stick ball.

For her it will always be the moment she met one of her best friends.

How crazy is that?

Something that was just an ordinary moment in my life became such an important moment in hers.

And I think that’s pretty amazing.

You really never know what little things you do are going to mean to someone else.

I don’t remember that day the way she does.

But I know now that it mattered.

And I’m pretty proud of that little girl who picked K for stick ball.

Maybe someday you’ll be lucky enough to hear K tell the story of the day we met.

And when you do, you’ll understand why I’m so glad that little girl picked her.

💛
